CrimeCraft Review (PC)

The apocalypse has left humanity in bad shape, and you're struggling to survive in an anarchic, gang-infested world where life is cheap. The only remaining semblance of civilization is Sunrise City, a refuge of sorts from the crime and constant warfare that rages on outside the perimeter. CrimeCraft is another attempt to blend shooter combat with RPG character development, including levels and extensive itemization. Read on to see how it works out.

Not So Massive
CrimeCraft makes an effort to provide a persistent world, but that really amounts to 3 hubs within Sunrise City which serve little purpose other than to meet, trade, and upgrade skills. From these hubs you depart into instances with a maximum of 16 players where all the shooting takes place. You enter these instances by talking to an NPC, or simply selecting them from a menu not entirely unlike a server browser for a typical online shooter.

There is really nothing massively multiplayer about CrimeCraft, unless your only requirements for that label are an in-game auction, a guild system, and a subscription fee. The truth is you'll find much larger matches in countless multiplayer PC shooters including Battlefield 2 (64 players) and Team Fortress 2 (32 players), and if you were hoping for something on the scale of Planetside you'll be sorely disappointed.

Graphics and Interface
The game is built on the Unreal 3 graphics engine, which provides for fluid action, but the visuals aren't anthing special. The model animation looks awkward at times, and while instances successfully portray a few different environments, they're not all that memorable. The city is represented quite faithfully with skyscapers and neon signs, but curiously, no vehicles. It's also rather large, which is annoying considering that there's nothing to do in it but run from one NPC to another micromanaging your character.

CrimeCraft uses a third-person perspective, and I often wish I could zoom right into first person rather than always looking over the shoulder. It's particularly bothersome when you're taking cover behind something and trying to shoot over or around it, but because your sight is higher than your weapon, you hit the object instead. The right mouse button puts you in a "scope" mode, which gives you magnification and finer aim but slows you down. Most of the controls follow shooter conventions, except that, oddly enough, they've removed jump and replaced it with a roll/dodge move. Although dodging is not entirely useless, I'd prefer to be able to jump over small ankle-high obstacles rather than getting caught on them as though my feet were glued to the ground.

PvE Instances
You have the option to play against other players or jump into cooperative matches against bots. The enemy AI is better than average; they take cover, lob grenades with impressive accuracy, and rarely rush around a corner into a storm of bullets. All of your kills, headshots, double kills, last bullet kills, and so on, are tallied and contribute to the experience points you are granted. There are about 8 types of matches, which include things like Turf War, Riot, Shootout, and SafeGuard. Most of these correspond to familiar shooter play modes such as Control Points, Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag, with some small variations. The most common PvE instances are Stockpile, which are essentially just shootouts where crafting materials can be gathered.

Part of the problem with CrimeCraft's PvE is that the instance design is weak. The bots respawn at regular intervals, and always in the same places, so you don't get any real sense of clearing an area. In match types with a boss it's just a slightly tougher mob that spawns after you've killed enough regular mobs. Assuming there is room, anyone can join or leave a match in progress, and they don't scale that well to different numbers or levels players, nor do they require teamwork. Despite respectable AI, PvE gets repetitive very quickly, especially since the playerbase is so small it's hard to get anything other than a Stockpile match started.

PvP Instances
The alternative to playing against bots is to join PvP matches against other players. Perhaps the most peculiar and vexing thing about CrimeCraft is that PvP matches aren't divided by player level. Nor are you given any information upfront about who is queued for a match or what level they are. Subsequently, a new player can find themselves hopelessly fighting against much higher level players with better weapons, skills, and armor, which is no contest at all.

It's almost inconceivable that this oversight made it past the design stage, however, in the last patch they took the first step toward addressing the issue. They've introduced a handicap system and added icons to the match browser to indicate whether the average level of players in a match is higher or lower than your own. This is a small improvement, although it does nothing to guarantee that newcomers aren't hopelessly outgunned. At least now you know that if you join a match with a couple red bars beside it you're going to be cannon fodder.

Of course, this approach creates other problems. It spreads the already sparse player population over more instances, making it harder to get a PvP match going, and handicapping higher level players tends to undermine the rewards they've spent so much time working toward.
I can't help thinking that adding RPG-style levels and itemization to a competitive shooter was ill-conceived in the first place, especially without some well-tested system to balance PvP matches. In most shooters that have some kind of in-game advancement, progress gives you more options and small advantages rather than overwhelming ones. In CrimeCraft, it's very hard to enjoy the PvP until you've spent a lot of time leveling up in the repetitive PvE instances.

You can join a gang (guild), but gang matches and tournaments haven't been implemented yet, so for now they aren't much more than buddy lists.

Crime Anyone?
It might be easier to overlook some of the game's shortcomings if it actually had more crime. There's nothing even remotely akin to a Grand Theft Auto inspired crime spree here, with car jackings, drug deals, high-speed chases, and heists. In CrimeCraft, like most multiplayer FPS games, you're almost always in a team-based shootout, although you might be wearing funky clothers rather than a uniform. While there is a game mode called "Robbery," in practice it's very similar to Capture the Flag
The Business Model
Online games have been experimenting with a wide range of potential revenue streams in recent years, and CrimeCraft seems to employ all of them. The game currently sells for $29.99 including 3 months of game time, after which you can get a standard subscription for $4.99 per month, or a premium subscription for $9.99 per month. There is an item mall where you can purchase extras that are mostly cosmetic in nature, and they've clearly left room for in-game ads should a demand for them arise.

A free trial with no time limit is now being offered, but be warned that, even without a time limit, it's a remarkably crippled trial. Not only are you denied the bulk of the weaponry, including some low-level quest rewards, but character creation restricts you to using the "random" button to select an appearance. Worse yet, you are stuck with that appearance even after upgrading your account, unless you start a new character or buy cosmetic changes at the item mall. You are given some "gold bars" with your account that could go towards this, which is some consolation, but it would make more sense to allow people who are trying the game to create a character they like. At any rate, they've done a stellar job of ensuring that you won't have much fun in CrimeCraft without paying for it.

Crafting
One of CrimeCraft's features that you don't often see in a shooter is crafting. At level 5 you can start training a profession: either Tailor, Gunsmith, Engineer, or Chemist. These allow you to make equipment for your character and for sale on the in-game auction. Materials are collected primarily in Stockpile instances, which accounts for their popularity. Unfortunately, the crafting system isn't well-documented enough, so you need to grope around in the dark for a while figuring out what you need and where to get it.
The Bottom Line
Despite having reasonably good shooter mechanics, decent AI, and the occasional well-balanced firefight, CrimeCraft is simply a poor value compared to other multiplayer shooters on the market. You'll pay less and have more fun with Team Fortress 2, Call of Duty, Battlefield 2, or any of a dozen other games out there. In fact, you would likely get better mileage out of a free title such as Combat Arms, Battlefield Heroes, or Quake Live. You may not get as much character customization, but you'll have a fighting chance right from the start, far more people to play with, a better selection of maps and possibly mods, and no monthly fee. Gamers have a lot of choices these days, and I'd be surprised if CrimeCraft could hold their attention even if it were free, let alone with its multi-pronged revenue approach. Vogster has a substantial list of improvements they hope to implement over the next six months, but it would take a small miracle to keep CrimeCraft alive until 2011.

Need For Speed ProStreet
PC LAN Patch Notes – December, 2007
===================================

This patch adds LAN (Local Area Network) play to the PC version of Need for Speed ProStreet.

LAN Play Overview:

This patch introduces multiplayer game play in a standalone LAN environment. Up to 32 games of 2-8 players per game are supported. The patch has two components:
- Updated ProStreet game client
- New ProStreet LAN Server

IMPORTANT:
- ProStreet PC LAN Game Server is a separate application that must be started before attempting to use LAN Play.
- Run one server only per LAN. Only one ProStreet PC LAN Game Server is required per LAN. Each server can host up to 32 games.

ProStreet Game Client
===================================

Prerequisite: The PC LAN Game Server MUST be running on one PC connected to the LAN before selecting LAN in the ProStreet game. See below for instructions on how to start up a PC LAN Game Server.

LAN Game play option can be found on the main menu.

Step 1) PC LAN Game Server Auto-Discovery

When LAN is selected, ProStreet will automatically discover and connect to the LAN Game Server running on the LAN.

If not found automatically, the player is presented with a screen to manually enter the IP Address of the PC LAN Game Server in case the server is running on a different subnet.

Step 2) LAN Account Creation

ProStreet PC LAN play requires each player to create a user account on the LAN Game Server. The username and password are case sensitive. All LAN statistics and leaderboards collected during LAN games are associated with each players account.

Note: LAN play does not require an internet connection and does not use EA Nation user accounts.

Step 3) Login

Login using the created LAN account.

Step 4) Lobby Screen

After login, the user is presented with the LAN lobby screen which shows a list of all active games (1 or more players) running in the ProStreet LAN Server. From the lobby screen, either create a new LAN game or join an existing LAN game.

If the ProStreet LAN Server has not been configured with enough game servers, then an attempt to create a new LAN Game will fail. In which case, see below for instructions on ProStreet LAN Server configuration.

ProStreet LAN Server
===================================

Overview:
The ProStreet LAN Server provides the following functionality:
- Hosts up to 32 simultaneous games of 2-8 players per game
- LAN Player Account Database
- LAN Leaderboards and Game Statistics
- Game Results Web Server
- Game Results RSS Feed

Note that only ONE PC connected to the LAN should host the ProStreet LAN Server.

ProStreet LAN Server System requirements:
- Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0. Can be installed from:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856eacb-4362-4b0d-8edd-aab15c5e04f5&displaylang=en

Step 1) Startup ProStreet LAN Server
In the ProStreet install directory, run the following application:
\Online\Launcher.exe

E.g. "C:\Program Files\Electronic Arts\Need For Speed ProStreet\Online\Launcher.exe"

Step 2) ProStreet LAN Server Configuration

In the ProStreet LAN Server window, select “Settings->Editâ€‌. The following options are available:
- Max Create Games: (Default 1)
- Server Port: (Default 10104)
- HTTP Port: (Default 8080)
- RSSFeed: (Default Enabled)

Select the number of games that the server is to host. Maximum of 32 games can be hosted. Select “OKâ€‌. Server must be restarted for changes to take effect. Restart server by selecting “File->Restartâ€‌.

ProStreet LAN Server: Game Results Web Server
===================================

The LAN game results collected in the ProStreet LAN Server can be viewed by any PC connected to the LAN via a web browser. Note that a LAN game must be completed and exited by all players in order for a game result to be finalized and logged on the server.

The ProStreet LAN Server game results web page is located at the following URL by default: http://SERVERIP:8080.

If you wish to change the port that the web server runs on, edit “Server Portâ€‌ which can be found under “Settings->Editâ€‌ in the ProStreet LAN Server Window.

ProStreet LAN Server: Game Results RSS 2.0 Feed
===================================

The LAN Game Server provides a RSS feed of completed game results as they occur. The RSS feed is RSS 2.0 and you must have a compatible RSS client to subscribe to the feed. (E.g. Mozilla Firefox Version 2 or later; or, Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 7 or later).

A link to the RSS 2.0 feed is on the ProStreet LAN Server web page at URL: http://SERVERIP:8080

Alternatively, the rss 2.0 xml file is located at:
http://SERVERIP:8080/lan-rss.xml

FAQ and Troubleshooting Guide – December, 2007
==============================================

1) How can I run the ProStreet LAN Server on a different port?

In the ProStreet LAN Server window, select “Settings->Editâ€‌. The following options are available:
- Max Create Games: (Default 1)
- Server Port: (Default 10104)
- HTTP Port: (Default 8080)
- RSSFeed: (Default Enabled)

In the Server Port field, enter the port number you want the ProStreet LAN Server to listen to.

Restart the LAN server. Select "File->Restart".

2) When attempting to create a LAN game, I get the message "Maximum number of games created on the ProStreet LAN Server. Please reconfigure server or try again."

The ProStreet LAN Server needs to be reconfigured with a greater number of games.

In the ProStreet LAN Server window, select “Settings->Editâ€‌. The following options are available:
- Max Create Games: (Default 1)
- Server Port: (Default 10104)
- HTTP Port: (Default 8080)
- RSSFeed: (Default Enabled)

In the Max Create Games field, increase the number of games you wish to run. This is the total number of simultaneous games that the ProStreet LAN Server will support. The suggested maximum is 32 games.

Restart the LAN server. Select "File->Restart".

3) Cannot auto detect ProStreet LAN Server.

After starting up the ProStreet LAN Server on a different computer and selecting LAN from the ProStreet game main menu, auto discovery of the ProStreet LAN Server is failing and I am prompted to enter the IP address and port of the LAN server manually.

Both the ProStreet LAN Server and ProStreet PC Game must be running on the same subnet for autodiscover to work correctly. Ensure that the ProStreet LAN Server and ProStreet PC Game are on the same IP subnet.

4) Players are connected to the ProStreet LAN Server but do not see the same game list?

Likely that multiple ProStreet LAN Servers are running on the same subnet. There should only be ONE ProStreet LAN Server running per LAN. Shutdown the additional ProStreet LAN Servers on the LAN.

5) How can I disable the RSS Feed and web server?

In the ProStreet LAN Server window, select “Settings->Editâ€‌. The following options are available:
- Max Create Games: (Default 1)
- Server Port: (Default 10104)
- HTTP Port: (Default 8080)
- RSSFeed: (Default Enabled)

Uncheck the RSSFeed option.

Restart the LAN server. Select "File->Restart".

6) How can I run the RSS Feed and web server on a different port?

In the ProStreet LAN Server window, select “Settings->Editâ€‌. The following options are available:
- Max Create Games: (Default 1)
- Server Port: (Default 10104)
- HTTP Port: (Default 8080)
- RSSFeed: (Default Enabled)

In the HTTP Port field, enter the port number you want the RSS and web server to listen to.

Restart the LAN server. Select "File->Restart".

7) How can I delete the game results displayed on the RSS Feed and web server?

Shut down the ProStreet LAN Server. Select "File->Exit".

Delete the following files:
\Online\statsdb.bin
\Online\gamelist-working.html
\Online\lan-rss-working.html

Delete the file folders starting with "LAN-Game-Results-":
\Online\LAN-Game-Results-*

Start ProStreet LAN Server. Run the following application:
\Online\Launcher.exe

8) How can I delete the player account database?

Shut down the ProStreet LAN Server. Select "File->Exit".

Delete the following files:
\Online\playerDB.txt

Start ProStreet LAN Server. Run the following application:
\Online\Launcher.exe

XIII—Downloads

Ubisoft's action conspiracy thriller XIII is based on a comic book of the same name from Belgian author Jean Van Hamme, and it feels like a gritty graphic novel come to life. It offers a lot of unique features that make it stand out from the traditional first-person shooter genre, not the least of which is the unique cel-shading graphics don't so much render as illustrate the game.

In addition to the shading are comic-style action pop-ups and voice bubbles that describe the scenes that you walk through and interact with. And you'll need a lot of description to find out what's been going on in the crazy world you find yourself in.

The single-player game is broken up into the obligatory 13 different chapters and unfolds as it should: like a well-drawn comic. You wake up on a desolate beach, sans memory, with only a tattoo--XIII, naturally--a bank key, and a frame-job of presidential assassination to clue you in to what happened. As you learn more about your past, you'll discover skills that you literally didn't know you had--and can now use.

These skills include a "sixth sense" that lets you know when enemies are approaching, the ability to use the bad dudes as human shields, and a variety of covert infiltration capabilities. In addition to melee skills, there are a variety of weapons that can be used in the game, from crossbows to sniper rifles to harpoon guns, each with their own alternative fire. The game lets you wield mundane items as weapons as well, tossing chairs, bottles, and ashtrays at the heads of your enemies, for example.

The multiplayer modes across the range of platforms are also quite novel. XIII will be available for PC as well as the big three consoles, and each platform will have its own style of multiplayer gaming. In addition to the standard bearers of CTF and deathmatch, there will be unique games such as Power Up, which delegates pick-ups according to need--the leading player gets the worst power ups and vice versa.

The game will be playable online for PC, Xbox, and PS2, and split-screen for GameCube. In fact, it's the first online FPS available for the PS2. We took the multiplayer PC demo of XIII for a spin and it looked sharp and felt just as crisp--like a mix of Duke Nukem and Half-Life.

Audio's no slouch either, with actors David Duchovny, Eve, and Adam West lending their vocals to the characters. And the ambient score follows your character's action, changing tempo as activity changes. All in all, XIII looks to be several Roman numerals ahead of the traditional brand of first-person action game

America's Army—Overview

The realism in America's Army is undeniable. If you’re too close to a grenade going off, your ears will ring. And flash grenades white out your screen, making you useless for 20 seconds. Aiming a sniper rifle is affected by your breathing – and it’s much more accurate if you take the shot from a crouched or prone position or take the time to set up your tripod.

Optimized for GeForce graphics, weapon effects – from real Army weapons such as the M16A2 assault rifle and M24 sniper rifle – offer another layer of realism. Tracers zip by as machine gun fire barely misses, shell casings ping off the ground around you as you return fire, wood splinters and glass shards rain from the wall behind as bullets tear out chunks – this isn’t like any “free” game you’ve seen before.

Multiplayer missions support up to 32 players involved in assignment tours, but before gamers can play online, they’ll have to complete the appropriate training. Teamwork is emphasized, especially through communication – via speech, radio messages, or actual military hand and arm signals.

Gamers are also subject to the Rules of Engagement for online combat. Any major violations – such as injuring or killing a teammate – could result in being sent to virtual prison. And just as in the Army’s real force-on-force training practices, players always perceive that they are fighting as members of the Army – the opposing force appears to be in enemy uniforms with appropriate weapons.

Blur Multiplayer Beta Hands-On

We went hands-on with the upcoming multiplayer beta for Bizarre's powered-up racing game.

It's not often that racing games compare themselves to adrenaline-fuelled action games, yet that is exactly what Bizarre Creations is aiming to do with Blur. We headed to Bizarre's studio in Liverpool for hands-on time with the fully licensed cars, supershiny graphics, and cacophony of over-the-top power-ups in the upcoming multiplayer beta of the full game.
At first glance, Blur seems like a typical arcade racing game. There are more than 30 tracks, and many of them take inspiration from real-world locations. There are also many cars to drive, which include fully licensed brands, such as BMW, Ford, and Lotus. Where Blur differentiates itself is in its use of power-ups, which enable you to launch homing missiles, deploy mines, or drop electromagnetic pulse fields on competitors. There are eight types of power-ups available, and all of them are unlocked from the get-go in the beta. You're able to hold three at any time, switching between them with the B button and launching them with A button.

Blur's online multiplayer supports up to 20 people, which is currently the largest available in a console racing game. There are eight different game modes to choose from, though only four are available in the beta. Your goal in most modes is to simply cross the finish line first, though other modes, such as Motor Mash, require you to earn points by damaging cars with power-ups or by ramming them off the road. The game employs a rank-based system, which is similar to that of such shooters as Modern Warfare and Gears of War. Competing in events earns you fans, and the more fans you get, the higher your rank, which, in turn, unlocks new game modes, cars, or mods
Mods allow you to change how your car deals with things, such as power-ups or damage. They are organised into three distinct types: aggressive, defensive, and show-off. You can choose three mods for each race and pick from each category. You can also save your favourite combinations of mods in custom categories, allowing you to easily switch between them for different races and cars. Some of the mods available include battering ram, where your car deals more damage in collisions; splash damage, which increases the range of the barge power-up; and fan favourite, which gains you extra fans for finishing a race. Not all mods are unlocked from the start of the game, and in some cases, you'll have to rank up all the way up to level 50 to get a hold of the best ones. There are also online leaderboards, so you can see how you stack up against the competition with stats, such as how many races you've won, your rank, and your driver score.

We also got to play with the multiplayer challenges. These are like achievements, and they reward you with fans for accomplishing a simple task, such as blocking 50 attacks using a shield or evading 75 shunts. More complex challenges are unlocked as you rank up, and you can view your progress with them at any time. In single-player, challenges are tied to a specific race or mission. For example, they may require you to complete a race in less than 2 minutes without using power-ups. These challenges can then be shared with your friends over Xbox Live and pop up as a dashboard message asking your friends if they want to try to beat your score. You can even customise challenges to make them more difficult should your friends be beating you too easily. This feature is open to Xbox Live Silver members, so everybody can take part in some form of multiplayer, even if it doesn't involve racing against people directly. Twitter is also integrated into the game, and you can share challenges you've completed or any of your statistics over the social network. Fortunately, tweets aren't automated, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about getting a barrage of Blur statistics from your friends
